FINE BONE CHINA
High quality fine bone china contains at least 30% bone ash, enabling thin, walled pieces to be made with a more delicate appearance and translucency compared to porcelain, and allowing for greater chip resistance and durability.
KNOW THE DIFFERENCE
Glass makes a clunking noise, while crystal sounds like a reverberated ringing. Another way to sound test the glassware is to lightly run a wet finger in a circular motion around the rim. If it’s crystal, you will be able to hear a subtle tone that emanates from it.
THE MARK OF QUALITY
Authentic silverware bears the mark of their maker, usually marked as “STER”, “92.5%”, or simply “925”, which stands for its percentage of pure silver. The makers imprint can be verified using a loupe or magnifying glass.
A TASTE OF THE ORIENTAL
HAND BLOWN & DECORATIVE
One of the most important indicators that an ornament is vintage is patina, or the wear that comes with age. Antique and vintage glass ornaments will show some wear, even if they are in excellent condition.
VINTAGE & ANTIQUE
Antiques are 100 years or older, while vintage is younger, though typically still prior to 1999. It’s a relatively simple distinction, but not necessarily as important as you think it might be. The age of a piece doesn’tdirectly correlate to value.
Genuine Oriental or Persian carpets have no sewn-on fringes. The fringes form the end of the warp yarns and are therefore an integral part of the carpet. If you see on the back of the carpet that the fringes have been sewn on, it is unlikely to be a genuine oriental rug.
EVALUATING YOUR PIECE
There are many types of antiques, and each one has a different value based on the current market value. To determine the value you must first identify its age. Let us help you uncover the value of your art, furniture or decor items before you invest. Contact us to learn more.
The origins of afternoon tea date back to the 19th century. High tea was reserved for British workers who had to wait until after work to enjoy tea in a newly industrialized Britain. In other parts of the world it is treated as a formal event to celebrate an occasion or even just an afternoon tea with a group of people.
Kim Hough, owner and curator of Violet Thyme Antiques, has spent years collecting antique pieces at auctions and markets around the world. Each piece is carefully selected for its unique appeal and value, taking its colour, shape, workmanship and era into consideration.
